The seaside in October? Absolutely. You can probably leave your swimsuit at home, though.

When we think of a seaside holiday, most of us automatically picture summer, 30°C temperatures and a towel spread out on the beach. But the Polish Baltic has a completely different atmosphere in autumn. The beaches empty out, the wind picks up, mornings get colder and instead of swimming, you can walk for miles along the coast without having to weave around another beach towel or sun umbrella every twenty metres. Of course, for most of us, swimming probably isn’t going to happen. Unless you spend the whole year cold-water swimming and your reaction to an icy Baltic Sea is an enthusiastic. But this is exactly where travelling by motorhome starts to make a surprising amount of sense. A walk along the beach in the morning, a trip somewhere new in the afternoon, and when the wind or rain arrives, your own kitchen, hot shower, heating and coffee are only a few steps away.

Travelling with a dog? Autumn makes the Baltic even better

This is one of the reasons we would definitely put Poland on our autumn travel list. Rules for dogs vary between individual towns and beaches, but Sopot, for example, has made its rules considerably more dog-friendly in recent years. During July and August, restrictions apply to guarded swimming areas while they are in operation. Two dedicated dog beaches near the borders with Gdynia and Gdańsk remain available without this restriction, and during the rest of the year dogs are allowed on all Sopot beaches. And suddenly, an autumn seaside holiday sounds a little different. Open the motorhome door in the morning, grab the lead and instead of doing the usual lap around the block, you have kilometres of Baltic coastline waiting for you.

And by the way, four-legged travellers are always welcome in our motorhome. 🐾 Because some road trips simply wouldn’t be complete without them. Just remember to check the current rules for the specific beach before you travel. Regulations for dogs are not the same everywhere along the Polish coast.

Forget seashells. Try hunting for amber instead.

And here’s another reason to bring the kids along. The Polish coast is famous for Baltic amber, and autumn weather can make this a particularly interesting time to search for it. After windy and stormy weather, head down to the shoreline and look among washed-up seaweed, pieces of wood and other natural debris left by the waves. If you’re travelling with children, congratulations – you’ve just found your morning activity.

Whoever finds the first piece of amber gets to choose where you stop for hot chocolate. Suddenly, nobody cares that it’s too cold to swim.

Where would we go? Sopot, Gdańsk… and then Łeba

If you have at least five days – which is also the minimum rental period for our motorhome – we would turn the trip into a little road trip. We’d start with the Tricity: Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia. Spend one day exploring Gdańsk, another in Sopot with a long walk along the coast, and don’t worry about clocking up hundreds of kilometres every day. Then we’d head towards Łeba and Słowiński National Park. And this is one place we definitely wouldn’t miss. Słowiński National Park protects one of the most remarkable sections of the Polish coast – its famous shifting sand dunes. Driven by the wind, the sand gradually moves across the landscape and can even uncover the remains of a forest that once stood here. The park covers more than 32,000 hectares and alongside its dunes, you’ll find lakes, wetlands, forests and the Baltic coastline. In places, it feels like you’ve travelled much further from home than you actually have. And those are exactly the kinds of places we love discovering by motorhome.

Autumn by the sea isn’t worse. It’s simply different.

We’re not going to tell you that the Baltic Sea in October can replace a week in Croatia. It can’t. And that’s exactly why we’d go. Instead of a sun lounger, there’s a long walk along the beach. Instead of hot sand, there’s a warm jumper. Instead of a crowded coastline, there’s a dog racing beside the sea, children searching for amber and, at the end of the day, a warm motorhome waiting for you.

Summer is for swimming. Autumn might just be better for travelling.
